Keywords in Domains are Good for Drawing Local Traffic
By Matt Hayden
There does seem to be some disagreement over whether keywords in a domain name actually draw search engine traffic. But experience tells me it does help, and quite a lot. I've also discovered that keyword combinations can be very effective, particularly when they are geo-specific. People will often search for their main keyword in combination with the name of a city or country. Obviously this has great relevance for people seeking local traffic. Many bricks and mortar businesses are in this position. But they often make the mistake of buying just one domain name that includes the title of their enterprise. And while this may bring some traffic if it is already established, since people will be searching for that particular name, doing this could result in the website missing out on a lot of new local viewers, particularly during the beginning of its life on the web. That's why I would recommend putting two or three keywords in the domain name, with one of them being a location. Say you have a pet store in Perth that has a great range of puppies called Puppy Paradise. Instead of just buying the domain name that has that title in it (although of course you should do this, because you can have several domains pointing to the same site anyway) you should consider buying one or more domains consisting only of keywords, one of which is "Perth". Using the Adwords keyword tool you can find out how many local searches there are for various combinations such as "puppies in Perth" or "Perth pets". You can play around with that and see which would bring the most traffic. Then you can do some basic research on the competition, keeping an eye out for sites that have such keywords in their domains. Chances are there will be very few such sites, if any. And even if there are some, it won't be difficult to get to the top half of page one of Google's results for searches for them. Remember also that three keywords together produce more possible permutations than two. Say you put "pets", "puppies" and "Perth" in the domain name. You've got a good chance of ranking for searches including all three keywords -- which may occur occasionally -- as well as for the various two word combinations that can be drawn from them. There may eventually come a time when there are just so many local business websites up on the web that this technique loses its effect. But that does seem to be a long way off. If you use it when building a business website chances are you can bring in a consistent trickle of very high quality local traffic, and pretty soon after it has been indexed by the search engines. |
