Make Your Political Blog Unique and Attract More Readers
By Matt Hayden
For anyone with a passion for politics, blogging is a highly recommended activity. You can use your blog to hone and express your political opinions as well as connect with other bloggers who share your views. You can even use it to announce campaigns and events. But you should remember that the blogosphere is truly immense now, and there are many millions of blogs out there. The subject of politics is certainly not as saturated as, say, the online money-making niche. But it's still extremely popular, so you will face a lot of competition. That's why you will need to make your blog stand out from the pack as much as possible. If you do this, readers will start to gravitate towards it and keep returning. And being an unusual and original voice, you'll also attract more links from other political bloggers. These backlinks can be hugely beneficial SEO-wise, boosting your traffic even more. So, how do make your political blog unique? Well, of course that's up to you. But I would suggest you consider some factors. Firstly, location. Many political bloggers will just comment on any issue from around the world. But if you focus on one country, or even city, then your blog will quickly start to be more interesting to people in that region. Similarly, instead of looking at a range of issues, you could focus on one category only. Examples include environmental issues, or gender politics. Then there is the blog's tone. You could write in a very serious and analytical way, and that's fine if it's in keeping with your character and aims. But remember that political blogs are often very serious. So why not make your blog more humorous or tongue-in-cheek? You could also go the other way and be as bitchy as possible. But you should be very careful with his approach. If you become too intemperate you may find yourself fighting a lawsuit. Politicians are more thick-skinned than most, but in the end they are only human. Remember also that you don't have to write as yourself. You could even invent a completely fictional, satirical persona to express your views. Some people even pretend to be well known political figures, and then mock and parody their behavior. These fake blogs can become very popular if written well. Some people worry about legal issues arising from this method, too. But this is generally not a problem -- at least not in democratic countries. Generally, the more famous a politician is, the less likely you are to have any problems (and the bigger your potential audience as well). As you add posts to your political blog you will no doubt discover more aspects that you can manipulate. But always remember that the more distinctive you make your blog, the more interest it will attract in the long term.
